06/13/2000 Archived Entry: "Four More Wine Buys -- With Lists of Retailers"

Finding the retailers that carry our Food Talk wine buys of the week is not easy, as I well knew it wouldn’t be. My new intern, Allie D’Augustine, has been working diligently on it, but sometimes even the distributors can’t or won’t provide the information, or, when they do, it is difficult to get complete information. In any case, gathering these lists (strictly as a service to you, I feel compelled to add) is very time-consuming. So bear with us. We’re working on it. The following list of wine buys, the last four talked about on Wednesday Food Talk, when Carol Berman, “The Traveling Sommelier,” joins us on the radio, has been annotated with retailers in New York State and New Jersey. We managed to find a few Connecticut retailers, too.

Still, the best way to get these wines conveniently is to give your local retailer the information about the wine and ask him to order it. If you are willing to buy several bottles at a time, he should not balk at that request. Suggest that he post a sign advertising that this is an “Arthur Schwartz with Food Talk Wine Buy of the Week” on the remainder of the case or cases that he is required to buy from the distributor. That should help move his stock.

By the way, Carol calls herself “The Traveling Sommelier” because her main occupation is bringing wine tastings to your home or event. If you want to give a really educational and amusing wine tasting party, call Carol and make some plans. She brings the wines, will guide you on the food to serve, and appears fully armed with her down-to-earth manner on this rarefied subject. It can be a personal, social event, or a fund-raiser for your organization or charity. She is based in New Jersey, but will travel anywhere in the metro area. Her phone number is (732) 381-7613.

HUGEL “GENTIL”
The Hugel family started growing wine in 1639 and now enjoys the reputation as one of the finest wine-making family in Alsace, the northeast region of France that has at times been part of neighboring Germany. Some of the grapes grown in Alsace are more associated with German wines, and this “Gentil” is a blend of many noble white wine grapes: sylvaner, tokay pinot gris, riesling, gewurztraminer, and muscat. According to our Food Talk sommelier, Carol Berman, riesling gives the wine finesse, muscat offers its perfume, sylvaner gives fruitiness, tokay pinot gris gives body, and gewurztraminer gives the wine its spicy edge.

It’s a wonderfully fragrant, easy-going white wine for sipping without food, but it would compliment almost any light summer fare, particularly seafood and chicken salad, cold veal and pork, even a tuna fish sandwich.

It costs about $9.99, and is distributed by Vintage Wines of New Jersey. It is imported by Frederick Wildman. Following are some of the retailers that carry it.

SELAKS SAUVINGON BLANC 1999
This white is from Marlborough, New Zealand, and typical of New Zealand sauvignon blancs, it is very intense. Carol Berman notes citrus -- lemon and grapefruit – in the bouquet, and says that on the palate there’s a “bold and beautiful earthiness … It explodes in the mouth as if biting into fresh grapefruit” I pointed out to her that since not everyone loves the astringency of grapefruit as much as we do, that that might be an off-putting description. Yes, it is a hugely refreshing wine, but it is not puckery.

As far as food combination, it is very, very food friendly. In fact, it is one of those big sauvignon blancs that can go with red meat – because it is from New Zealand, let me point out that mild New Zealand lamb would be a natural – veal, pork, roast chicken. Carol says it would be great with anything seasoned with dill. She thinks the herbaceous quality of the wine is a fine compliment to that herb. (Because of that I’ll be trying it with the dilled-up Turkish dishes I often cook in the summer.)

It costs about $10.99 and is distributed by Lauber Imports in Somerset, New Jersey, which reports that is available at the following retail stores.

BONNY DOON FRAMBOISE (NON VINTAGE)
This is a sweet table wine made from three types of raspberries. It is so incredibly aromatic that it can fill a whole room can with the smell of raspberries when you open the plastic-corked bottle. It is a rich wine, with a full mouth feel, but not syrup. Best of all, it is sweet without being cloying; it finishes as tart as a fresh raspberry does. As bold as it is, it is really quite delicate in its way.

Sip for its own sake at the end of a meal – dessert in a glass-- or enjoy it with chocolate.

It costs $9.99 a half bottle, and it is distributed by Michael Skurnik, Syosset, LI Following are some of the retailers that carry it.

MARTIN CODAX ALBARIÑO 1999
Albariño is a grape variety grown in the northwest of Spain, in the region of Galicia, specifically from Rias Baixas, which is a wine-growing region of Galicia. Some consider Albarino the most outstanding white wine of Spain. I do. Carol Berman says this is one of the best, if not the best example, too. It’s fragrance is reminiscent of riesling, but bolder, “with peach and pear aromatics and a prominent earthiness.” I think it has the taste of nuts – almonds specifically.

It is the perfect accompaniment to seafood – Galicia is famous for its seafood – and also goes well with cheese and light meats. I love sipping it for its own sake, especially this one, which has a lot of body.

It costs about $12.99 and is distributed by Tempranillo, Mamaroneck, NY. Other recommended Albariños are Legar de Cervera and Morgadio. You can find the Martin Codax at the following stores:
