05/20/2001 Archived Entry: "Wine Buy: Marques de Borba"
In the words of Carol Berman, who selects each week’s Wine Buy: “Marques de Borba is a Portuguese gem produced by J. Portugal Ramos, who is one of the most prominent figures in Portuguese wine production. His wines have a very distinctive style -- great balance and noticeable elegance.
Marques de Borba red is a blend of three grapes: Trincadiera for its aroma and body; Aragones, which is the same grape as Tempranillo (the grape of the Rioja region of Spain), and Periquita, which possesses red berry fruit and spicy qualities, a bit merlot-like. The wine is from the Alentejo region of Portugal, which is also the world's largest supplier of cork trees. Wonderfully refined, smooth and mouthfilling, Marques de Borba pairs well with pork dishes and poultry. It’s a great wine for the foods from your summer grill, too." Average retail price is $12.99. It is imported by Whitehall.
