08/02/2001 Archived Entry: "Wine Buy: Domaines des Cassagnoles"
Carol Berman describes Domaines des Cassagnoles 2000, from Gascony, in southwest France, as “the perfect summertime wine.” Perfect is going a little far, but, for the price, it’s a gem.
It is very dry, crisp, clean, earthy – which doesn’t mean heavy, but that it has the mineral taste of the earth – while also with a peach-y quality, from nose to finish, which is to say from aroma to lingering flavor. While I was on the radio sipping it, I felt I would love to drink this alongside charred chicken, some thick thighs cooked over charcoal. Later, at home, sipping again, I thought it would also go fabulously well with a salad Nicoise, or a Greek salad, or with clams, oysters or any fish, especially grilled. I think it is this wine’s earthiness that makes me think it will go well with anything charcoal cooked, so maybe it is “the perfect summertime wine.” In any case, at $7.99 a bottle, Domaines des Cassagnoles truly can be considered a “Wine Buy.”
