01/23/2002 Archived Entry: "Wine Buy: Ca' del Vispo Vernaccia de San Gimignano"
Most every wine drinker associates the Tuscany region of Italy with its most famous red wine, Chianti. This region also produces a very exciting white wine that is made from the Vernaccia grape.
This wine comes from the town of San Gimignano, an ancient place filled with towers overlooking lovely countryside, and containing sandstone soils. Ca' del Vispo's Vernaccia di San Gimignano displays the greatness of what white wine can do there, with it’s lemony and nut -scented nose, and full bodied minerality on the palate. Layered and lovely, this white wine is one sure to please red drinkers, because of its' complexity. It’s great with antipasto, shrimp sautéed with garlic and tomatoes, or any Tuscan white bean dish. It’s average retail price is $10.99. From Vias Imports Ltd., NY, NY. -Carol A. Berman
