01/30/2002 Archived Entry: "Wine Buy: Domaine Lamargue Merlot 2000"

From the moment this handsomely packaged wine was opened in the studio, Arthur and I were quite aware that this merlot was one of substance. Its concentrated aromas filled the room ... a "nose-dance," as I like to call it. Rich, dark and lush, both on the nose and palate, this atypical Merlot has so much more power than most at its price, $12.99 average retail.

Domaine Lamargue 2000 is the maiden vintage from this estate, which is located specifically in the Costieres de Nimes AOC (Appellation d 'Origine Controllee). But as Arthur noticed, the label states only "Vin de Pays D'oc,"- which happens to be the geographic area or region name, which includes the southern Rhone Valley.

Owned by Emanuele Bonomi and his family, who also own Sella & Mosca in Sardegna, Italy (which makes wines that both Arthur and I and many of you love), this is a state of the art winery. Veteran Rhone winemaker Jean Luc Colombo always works magic, which is so clear when tasting the Lamargue wines.

Imported by Palm Bay Imports, Boca Raton, Florida.
