07/14/2003 Archived Entry: "Garlic Reminder"

It’s garlic season out West and that means it’s time to place this year’s order for Vashon’s Old Fashioned Nursery garlic. I’ve mentioned Linda Swanson’s garlic before. It is amazingly long lasting. I still have braids of last year’s crop hanging in my kitchen, as beautiful to look at as they are delicious. This strain of garlic will stay fresh without sprouting or desiccating for over a year. Linda grows this garlic on Vashon Island, near Seattle, but it was brought to America by a Yugoslavian neighbor. The long braids of cured garlic she produces are as beautiful to look at as they are delicious.

Linda’s braids of 12 heads of garlic cost $14. She has not raised her price in five years. To ship one to three braids to New York metro costs $13. That comes to only $4.33 a braid for shipping and it’s definitely worth it. Braids ordered now will not be received until last August, early September.
