04/18/2005 Archived Entry: "Maven Wins Two (!!) Awards"
What can I say? I won. Arthur Schwartz’s New York City Food was named Cookbook of the Year by the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP), in addition to winning in its category – best American cookbook, given to a book that focuses “on ethnic, cultural, historic, or regional cooking in the United States.”
Yes, that’s two awards. The award ceremony, which of course honored books in many other categories, was held Saturday night at a gala dinner during the association’s annual conference, this year in Dallas. I was, most unfortunately, not able to attend. The award was accepted for me by my editor at Stewart, Tabori & Chang, Leslie Stoker. My friend, Vicki Caparulo, a cooking teacher from New Jersey, called first, as soon as I won in my category. I had a house full of people and they toasted me. Somehow, I didn’t get excited. It hadn’t seeped in yet. That was at about 8 o’clock eastern time. I didn’t hear about IACP Cookbook of the Year until Ron Longe, the publicity manager at STC, called sometime after 10. Fortunately, since we speak nearly every day, he had my phone number in his head. Whew! Now on to the next one!
