02/16/2007 Archived Entry: "Me and Julia Child"

I thought you might be amused by these two websites.

Zeek (short for Ezekiel, the Old Testament prophet) bills itself as a “Jewish journal of thought and culture.” The February issue features an interview with me: “Kishke, Culture, and Celebrity Chefs: A Conversation with the Food Maven”: http://www.zeek.net/702food/

While “surfing the net” (do people still use this expression?), I found this wonderful site that is all about Julia Child’s kitchen. If you put on your speakers, you’ll even get her dear voice.

I have to say that I LOVE Julia’s old kitchen, and it made me feel better about my own working kitchen with all my utensils and “stuff” in clear view. Frankly, I can’t stand the kitchen designs of today. When I see the new kitchen designs in magazines and on TV, I get chills. They either look like laboratories or they look ersatz -- phony “country” kitchens. The ones that make me laugh the loudest, or give me the deepest chill, are the supposed “Tuscan” kitchens. No Tuscan has a kitchen that looks like those.

Anyway … let me not go on about Tuscan everything, and contemporary kitchen design. Enjoy Julia’s.
