Nachas and Chremslach
(Note: Nachas is a Yiddish word that means prideful joy. It is generally used to express the feeling one gets when a child does something honorable. I have no children, so I have to derive nachas from my own accomplishments.)

Schrafft's Hot Fudge Sauce
Last week Arthur Schwartz’s New York City Food was nominated by the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) as the best book published this year in the “American” category. The book awards themselves will be held on April 16 at the association’s conference in Dallas, Texas. I think I have a good shot. While I usually attend the conference, and in fact usually speak at the conference and broadcast my radio program from the conference, I won’t be able to travel this year. I leave it to my editor to accept for me – and to call on her cell-phone the moment she knows anything. I will, of course, keep you posted, too.

Random Notes
I keep forgetting to tell you all that Arthur Schwartz’s New York City Food has gotten a great review by Irene Sax on on the website called Epicurious. Epicurious, besides having its own, original editorial, such as this review (now archived), features recipes that appear in the Condé Nast magazines, including Gourmet and Bon Appetit. Many of you are familiar with Irene because she used to be the food editor of Newsday, and currently reviews inexpensive restaurants for the New York Daily News.

James Beard Walking Tour
James Beard was the first person I wanted to meet when I became a food writer in 1969. Even then, three years before the publication of his towering work, “American Cookery,” he was the father of American gastronomy, as he is now called. He lived in Greenwich Village. I worked at Newsday. I assigned myself the story of going shopping with him at his favorite Greenwich Village stores. You can read the whole story in my new book, Arthur Schwartz’s New York City Food. Or, you can take a walking tour with me and Addie Tomei on April 2. We call it “James Beard’s Greenwich Village” and because -- after filling up two sessions already – we still have more interest in the walk, we have set a third date. As I said, it’s April 2.

Back from Florida
I’m back where I belong – Brooklyn. Florida does not agree with me. Palm trees don’t turn me on. Bare branches against a little snow look better to me. The clear, crisp light of New York winter, even the cold temperature, appeals to me more than the sun and warmth.
