I review restaurants in Brooklyn
My editor at BKLYN magazine is getting all riled up. Whenever my credits are given – for instance, at the end of a story I wrote for the New York Sun a couple of weeks ago, or in the piece you can still read (on line) about me and my kitchens in the New York Times – they never mention our wonderful, fabulous magazine available with a few quick clicks on your computer for a mere $12 a year. That’s four issues. BKLYN is a quarterly, and it is filled with great writing (not to mention my own) and photography, and the great art design you need to put the two together. And did I mention great editing. The best editing. And this from an old editor who thinks he was a pretty good editor, too.

Spaghetti with Porcini and Tomatoes
Last Saturday, I spent the day at Sickles Market in Little Silver, New Jersey. I was there to judge the market’s annual apple pie contest with Rozanne Gold – the queen of simplicity, having written nine “1-2-3” three-ingredient cookbooks -- and Carole Walter -- our area’s most celebrated baking teacher and the author of several award-winning baking books. The proceeds from the contest (and the sale of pies) this year goes to Holiday Express, an organization that entertains patients and other unfortunate people who are often forgotten by mainstream charities. Altogether, with a Friday night party and an auction, Sickles Market raised $45,000 to help make the holidays happy for many people.

Come to Italy with Me
It’s always great to be away, and always great to come home. So I am looking forward to going back to Italy, back to Tenuta Seliano, in two weeks. Yes, I have another group. Last year, three couples who wanted to come together requested an early November date, instead of our usual post Christmas to New Year session. I accommodated. Besides that I am happy to customize dates and tour specifics for groups of six or more, I thought it would be nice to be home for the holidays, which I haven’t been for five years. As usually happens, a few more people have decided that they want to come along in November, too. Now it’s a group of nine.

Personal Appearances Update
CALLING ALL APPLE PIES
Along with Rozanne Gold and Carole Walter, I will be a judge at the Sickles Market annual apple pie contest next Saturday, Oct. 22, at the market in Little Silver, New Jersey. This year the contest and adjunct festivities benefit Holiday Express, which brings entertainment and holiday cheer to places and people few other organizations serve—such as the less glamorous nursing homes, men’s shelters, AIDS hospices, and children’s wards.

Home from Italy, with a Bean Soup Recipe
I’m home now, back from a month in Italy, where I certainly covered a lot of territory since the beginning of September. It dawned on me as Cecilia and I were driving back from Umbria last week that I had been to six of Italy’s 20 provinces in three weeks. Without even trying. I started in Rome, went to Camaiore/ Pietrasanta for a few days, then down to Naples. That’s three regions right there – respectively, Lazio, Tuscany, and Campania.

Letter from Seliano
If you are signed up for my newsletter, which you can do by putting your email address in the box at the top of this page (it is free), you will have already received this via email. If you have not signed in for the newsletter, please do it now. Unfortunately, you will have missed the letter I sent out on September 6, informing my newsletter recipients that I was off to Italy. In any case, I have been in Italy now for three weeks, and have been very busy. I am now at Tenuta Seliano, in Paestum – with Iris Carulli and Cecilia Bellelli Baratta (La Baronessa) and her family, who are almost like my own after all these years. [more]
