Thanksgiving Wines
Just a reminder: Tomorrow night, Friday, November 19, I will be signing books at the Huntington Barnes & Noble. Somehow this was omitted from my appearance schedule (you know, stuff happens), but I definitely will be there. At 7 p.m. until … no one else wants a book signed, or the store closes, which comes first.

Thanksgiving at My House
For the first time in at least 10 years -- when, diverging from our usual routine, I celebrated Thanksgiving at my then-home in Connecticut, with my family, for a long, memorable weekend -- Thanksgiving is at my house this year. My sister, Andrea, and brother-in-law, Milt, have hosted this holiday since my nephew was born. That would be 26 Thanksgivings ago. Brian is now a doctor. His sister, Rachel, is getting her masters degree in social work this spring. In fact, it is because Rachel is visiting from St. Louis, and Brian is a doctor, a first-year resident at a Manhattan hospital, that I selfishly decided to take on the burden (ha!) of Thanksgiving dinner. I wanted to spend more than just dinnertime with Rachel – she and her parents will arrive on Wednesday, giving us a night of down time together. Brian can’t leave his Manhattan hospital until early evening, making it impossible to get to his parent’s in New Jersey before it would be time to return.

More lunching around, more reminders
Just a reminder: There are still some places left at the dinner I am hosting to benefit the Jewish Federation of Greater Monmouth County this Wednesday, Nov. 17, at 6:30 p.m. This is a very special community-wide event featuring a dinner of old-time New York dishes that I planned and will speak about. Jewish Federation provides food and sustenance for individuals and families locally, in Israel and worldwide. To attend, guests are asked to make a minimum family donation of $500, payable throughout 2005. Call (732) 866-4300. Copies of my new book will be available for purchase and signing.

New Newsletter and a Wine Buy
If you are reading this page, you must have noticed the new box at the top. There is a similar sign-up-for the newsletter box on my home page, too. It my new mailing list -- so to speak. I know, I know -- I asked you to send me email so I could put together a list, but this is so much more efficient -- and permanent. And no one will ever again get anyone else's email address because I didn't click on the right box. So -- please, please put your address in that box above. Even if you have sent me mail recently. There will soon also be a more inter-active place on the site, so we can have a conversation going -- not quite like it used to be on the radio, but progress in my efforts to keep the food talk with Arthur going. The only thing I miss about the radio is you all.
Now, here’s Carol Berman’s Wine Buy of the Week. She will be doing one every Wednesday, as in radio days. Carol is back on the radio, not so by the way. She can now be heard on Friday mornings, 7:10 a.m., on WLIE 540AM, which, as its call letters imply, is based on Long Island but can be eard in New York City, as well as parts of New Jersey. For her Class in a Glass services – planning and executing wine tastings and wine-based events -- call her at (973) 324-0989.

My Book Hits Stores, Plus New Park Slope Restaurants
I’ve been practicing making Steak Diane, the old warhorse that was served in supper clubs and other glamorous watering holes from the 1930s through the ‘60s. ‘21’ still serves it, prepared tableside and flambéed, but the reason I have been cooking it is because it is one of my demonstration dishes for upcoming book promotion appearances. The recipe is in “Arthur Schwartz’s New York City Food,” and now that the book is being shelved in stores (and available on Amazon.com) I begin talking about it, cooking from it, and signing it this Friday at Macy’s Herald Square – 1 p.m. Come see me if you can. I’ll give you a taste of the famous Steak Diane. If you can’t make it on Friday, on Saturday I will be at Broadway Panhandler, 477 Broome St., between Greene and Wooster, also at 1 p.m., also flambéing pans of Steak Diane.

Lamb Shanks in Tomato Sauce
I went to a new butcher the other day and he had the most beautiful lamb shanks in his case. I took four. I love lamb shanks. But what to do with them this time? In my new book, I have Tom Valenti’s famous recipe for lamb shanks, the recipe that launched his career and fame when he was cooking at a little place on Dominick Street in Tribeca, Alison on Dominick. This was before Tribeca was Hollywood on the Hudson. Now Valenti has two restaurants on the Upper West Side, Ouest and ‘Cesca, where he serves similar dishes. [more]

Oops! Another Appearance
I can’t believe I never told you about my demonstration and book signing at Macy’s Herald Square next Friday, November 12, at 1 p.m. Somehow, it got left out of my appearance schedule. I am trying to remedy that now.) But I’ll be there – preparing Steak Diane and telling stories about the old glamour restaurants – The Stork Club, The Colony – where such dishes were prepared tableside, and making the fabulous pancakes that they used to make in the window of Child’s. It’s my first book event.
